At least 50 Nigerian students studying in Turkey were arrested in Istanbul and detained for 11 hours on alleged order of the Turkish government following the July 15th failed military coup in the country.<br/>
<br/>
Most of the detained Nigerians, mainly students of Fathi University and Meliksah University were made to sign deportation documents. <br/>
<br/>
Narrating her ordeal in a telephone call from THISDAY, one of the Nigerian students deported, Rukkaya Usman, said they were treated like criminals before the Turkish authorities repatriated them back to Nigeria.<br/>
<br/>
Usman is a final year student of Political Science and International Relations at Meliksah University, one of the schools shut down in the wake of the failed coup.<br/>
<br/>
The Turkish authorities had said the affected schools were terrorist schools because they have links with Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen, whom the Turkish government had accused of being the mastermind of the coup.</div>

The reason for his obvious joy is not far-fetched. Since he assumed office as governor in November 12, 2012, Oshiomhole has never rested, he has been fighting wars. Soon after he was sworn-in, he promised to end god fatherism, demystify poor governance and improve infrastructures and welfare of the people. After winning the case at the Court of Appeal which sacked the then Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governor, Prof. Osarhiemen Osunbor, the former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), had thought the war was over. He never knew the war was just starting.<br/>

The governor was immediately faced with the challenge of managing the political god fathers in the state. Any one who knew Edo, since 1999, will know that it was the hub of the PDP in Nigeria. Chief Tony Anenih was Chairman, Board of Trustees of the PDP for years and, as a matter of fact, his Uromi residence was political Mecca for PDP politicians. You have Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin; his son, Lucky, and Dr Samuel Ogbemudia. But while Ogbemudia, who was impressed with the developmental strides of Oshiomhole, joined forces with Oshiomhole, the Igbinedions and Anenih remained in the trenches after they fell out with Oshiomhole.</div>

From a Neolithic and Iron Age Civilization by the Nok in the Present Day Jos in Plateau State as far back as 800 BC, to the 11th Century formation of the Hausa Kingdoms and Borno Dynasty in the North, Oyo and Benin Kingdoms in the South, to the founding of the Sokoto Caliphate in 1809, to the 1850s establishment of British presence around Lagos, to the 1914 Nigerian Protectorate, to our Independence from British rule in 1960, then the dark 30 months of the brutal Civil War which began in 1967, to Military Rule, then Democracy, to the Present Day, we have managed to present a ‘common front’ as a People.<br/>
Recently, there have been strident calls from some quarters for a break up of Nigeria as we know it, based on perceived injustices to some sections of our dear Country. Each proponent for this argument feels justified based on what they have experienced or are experiencing.<br/>
But, is Nigeria’s disintegration the solution to our problems?<br/>
<br/>
I say NO. This is because any Country which desires to be taken seriously in the comity of developed Nations, derives its strength from its human and material resources, size and population. We will not stand a chance if we are divided. Remember, United we stand, Divided we fall.<br/>
<br/>
Government therefore, needs to move decisively to check the current trend of general insecurity, violence, repression, imbalance and yes, injustice – perceived or real.<br/>
<br/>
The Country Nigeria was founded so that people living in the then British Colony of Nigeria with their multiple backgrounds, could unite as one people in order to be able to resist colonialism.<br/>
<br/>
It is important on this 56th Anniversary of our Independence to remember the main reason that brought us together, and remember that majority of Nigerians are still thriving in peaceful co-existence with their neighbours, regardless of what part of Nigeria they come from or how they worship God.<br/>

<br/>
For our sake therefore, our common Nigerian identity cannot be compromised.<br/>
