Disregard of human rights and dignity of detainees

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>A most unpleasant event occurred in an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos Island recently, which illustrated the total disregard of the human rights and dignity of detainees and inmates in the custody of the Nigerian law enforcement agencies. 
 
An 18 year-old suspect, one Avekpon Bernard who was being arraigned along with 22 others, had to defecate in the dock because he was denied the right to answer an urgent call of nature while about to be docked. 
 
He complained to the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) who brought them to court about his pressing need to visit the toilet. But rather than helping him out, the police officer insisted that he must go into the dock with the others who were being tried for acts likely to cause a breach of public order. 
 
When Avekpon could no longer bear the distress he had no choice but to relieve himself in the dock, which fouled the atmosphere in the courtroom. Ironically, the same police officer who had refused to assist him was the one ordered to take the young man out of the court and sort out the mess. 
 
This is one of the legions of cases of maltreatment of suspects brought into the custody of the law in Nigeria, particularly the Police and the Prisons. The failure of government to upgrade the facilities of our correctional institutions is exacerbated by the unfeeling and inhumane attitudes of correctional officers to detainees, with the result that the suspects are treated worse than convicted criminals. This flies in the face of the presumption of our laws that suspects are innocent until convicted after a due process trial.</div>

Cholera outbreak: Bring back sanitation inspectors, lawmakers tell Ambode

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>THE Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to bring back health inspection officers in each of the 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, to address the menace of cholera outbreak. 
The House contended that the return of sanitary health officers and inspectors in the local councils will the state to tackle the problem of poor hygiene, which leads to cholera outbreak. 
 
The legislators also called for a major stakeholders’ meeting on the recent cholera outbreak in Oshodi/Isolo Local Council Development Area, LCDA,where six people died and about 45 people were reportedly infected. 
 
The stakeholders’ meeting, according to the lawmakers, will involve the ministries of Health, Environment, Information and Strategy, and Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, where all participants would be expected to map out ways to identify the root cause of the problem with a view to forestalling recurrence. 
 
Key stakeholders from the Ministry of Agric and Rural Development as well as all Community 
Development Associations (CDAs) are also expected to be part of the meeting. 
 
The Chairman, House Committee on Health, Mr. Olusegun Olulade, in a motion under ‘Matter of Public Urgency’, yesterday drew the attention of other lawmakers to the unfortunate incident, which was said to have occurred when some residents of the community consumed some local salad popularly known as “Abacha,” believed to have been contaminated. 
 
To avert recurrence, he said the state government should deploy health inspection officers to the councils, who would be going from one food seller to another with a view to fishing out potentially contaminated food. 
 
“The outbreak of the disease with the subsequent loss of six lives is regrettable. Its cause has been attributed to the consumption of contaminated local salad by some residents. But in order to forestall a recurrence there is need for a stakeholders’ meeting involving relevant ministries and agencies to be held as soon as possible”, he said.</div>

After a nail-biting two month nationwide search, 23 year old Olayinka Oladiran from Abeokuta was finally revealed as the winner of the 2016 MTV Base VJ Search – Nigeria on MTV Base (DStv channel 322) on Friday 23 September. 
 
Four finalists from all over the country slugged it out for the top slot during the televised grand final in front of Viacom executives Alex Okosi and Katung Aduwak, as well as famous faces from the entertainment industry including Olisa Adibua, Vector Tha Viper, Ikechukwu, Niniola, among many others.

Olayinka Oladiran beat fellow finalists Tomiwa Olorunfemi (23), Tochukwu Onwubiko (21) and 19 year-old twins, Grace and Glory Danbaki after competing with thousands of hopefuls in Lagos, Enugu and Abuja plus online and social media applicants. While all the competitors brought their “A-Games” to the finale, K’Ola outstripped the competition thanks to her bubbly personality, relaxed stage presence, and the ability to relate to the audience. 
 
The other finalists also went home with contracts and will be representing MTV Base as VJs on new shows coming to the channel.</div>

Vanguard reports that the pastor whose church could not be ascertained as at the time of this report, had told his members that got ordered him to destroy all the shrines in Ketu community. But the ‘spiritual exercise’ became awry when he got stuck and unconscious right in the shrine. This got the attention of the residents and the priests in charge of the shrine insisted that until they performed some ritual on him, he could not be let off the hook. 
 
It however took the intervention of the Alaye of Ayetoro, Oba Abdulaziz Adelakun, for the case to be settled. The pastor was later treated by the priests before he regained consciousness. 
 
Ogun state police public relations officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said the pastor might be charged for sacrilege and malicious damage. He said: 
 
“The police got the report in Ayetoro that one Evangelist Wale Fagbere went to Ketu to destroy a shrine. After the destruction, the man became unconscious. When policemen visited the place, the traditionalists claimed that the subject could not be taken away until some spiritual exercise had been performed. 
 
”The Alaye of Ayetoro, Oba AbdulAzeez Adelakun, waded into the matter which led to the release of the man. The victim has been revived and has been handed over to his family for more spiritual cleansing”. 
 
When asked who the police would charge, the traditionalists or the victim, the PPRO said the latter would be charged for sacrilege and malicious damage after he gets well. He said the police next step would be determined by the traditionalists lodging of a complaint against the pastor. 
 
“Everybody has right to worship anything he so desires”, Oyeyemi said.

The organization is also asking the court “for such order or other orders as the Honourable Court may deem fit to make in the circumstance.” 
 
The suit with number FHC/L/CS/1318/2016 dated 23th September 2016 was filed on behalf of SERAP by Adetokunbo Mumuni. SERAP’s suit is coming against the background of the request last week by Mrs Jonathan for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to defreeze her accounts and offer her a public apology within 14-days. 
 
SERAP’s suit brought under Order 34, Rules 1 (1) (a); 2, Rule 3 (1) and (2) (a), (b) and (c) of the Federal High Court Rules, 2009 and Inherent Jurisdiction of the Court reads in part: “The Attorney General of the Federation has a duty to prosecute intentional illicit enrichment, that is, a significant increase in the assets of a public official that he or she cannot reasonably explain in relation to his or her lawful income.” 
 
“By virtue of Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) the Attorney General of the Federation is constitutionally empowered to institute and undertake criminal proceedings against any person in Nigeria in respect of any offence created by or under any Act of the National assembly in superior courts in Nigeria.”

Positioned as a sequel to the GTBank Food and Drink Weekend, the GTBank Fashion Weekend is part of the Bank’s initiative to strengthen small businesses in key economic sectors through non-profit consumer-focused fairs and capacity building initiatives that serve to boost their expertise, exposure and business growth.

The Weekend will be headlined by top fashion industry experts, trend setters as well as locally renowned designers and style authorities. Attendees will be treated to a series of fashion events such as Entrepreneurial and Fashion Master Classes and Retail Exhibitions. 
 
At the heart of the GTBank Fashion weekend are the fashion Master classes facilitated by renowned local and international fashion experts. This year’s Master Classes will cover relevant topics addressing challenges and opportunities across the entire industry value chain including: Fashion Entrepreneurship; Perfecting Design; Brand Positioning, Growth & Profitability; Product Development; The e-Commerce Leap and several others. 
 
The Retail exhibition will showcase dozens of leading Small Businesses within the fashion and beauty industry, offering a diverse range of affordable and luxury apparel, footwear, accessories, beauty items, and much more. As part of the exhibition experience, there will be a craft section, featuring handcrafted indigenous garments and accessories. Culminating each day will be a series of Runway shows featuring collections by renowned Nigerian and African Fashion brands.
